Nicotine is one of the most commonly used drugs in USA, which has addictive potential.
Since as long back as the 20th century, nicotine has been consumed by way of cigarette
smoking. Statistics reveal that in the year 1998 in America, there were 60 million
cigarette smokers, which included 28% of the people in the age group of 12 years
and older. 4.1 million people belonged to the age group of 12-17, constituting
18% of this age group.
In the year 1989, a report was issued by the U.S. Surgeon General stating that
the various forms of tobacco such as cigarettes, pipes, cigars as well as chewing
tobacco can lead to addiction. This report also concluded that nicotine is the
culprit that causes such an addiction. The report also pointed out smoking as the
main reason behind strokes and the third reason for deaths in USA.
